HEAR ME OUT
Lectures & Public Speaking
After a number of requests from institutions, educational facilities and enterprises, I have taken up public speaking and seminars. Among my speaking engagements have been places such as the tradition-steeped University of Lund (guest lecturer) and the National Danish Broadcast Corporation (Denmark's Radio).
My standard design lecture is based on the transformation of the Lycos Portal Network (Sort of the tale of the ugly duckling).
It consist of a number of points regarding the following key issues:
The starting point:
Explaining the before and after process of the design phase and how I constructed a temporary design as a kind of "damage control", making the click-through rate rise by 700%.
Navigation:
Why did the final choice land on a tabular (tabs) navigational system? What are the benefits and what are the drawbacks? Which tools are available for navigation when dealing with a modern, user friendly website?
Prototypes:
The designs that never went live. Providing insight into the process of building your work on stepping stones. This insight illuminates the successes and pitfalls of the different development stages.
Vision & Target group:
How our mantra: "Stylish, simple and reliable" was conceived.
Our ideal user: "Nicole 29". Background on our target groups, user surveys, focus groups. The new look and feel.
The Cookbook:
A walk through of our design manual "The Cookbook", from idea to publication, containing examples, anecdotes of the different elements, etc.
My aim is to make my lectures an informal place of insight into the world of professional interactive design. It is done in a relaxed manner with an emphasis on providing relevant tools and making room for questions. I use diverse visual aids, like video and screenshots to illustrate points and keep a dynamic flow.
I usually conclude by giving my best advice and sharing my most valuable experiences regarding design. This includes how to guide your "non-design-focused" management through important decision-making and getting the work done "your way".
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS:
Lund University
It is hereby certified that on November 10, 2003, Mr. Hansen, Peter-Leif (Civic reg. nr. 091173-1169) held a guest lecture at Lund University, Department of Informatics representing Lycos Europe as Creative Director.
The guest lecture was a part of a course named Human-Computer Interaction:
Analysis, and the topic of the lecture was user-centered design at Lycos Europe. The lecture was very appreciated among the students since it gave them valuable insights on practical design work.
Mr. Hansen was able to convey important principles and experiences as regards to design of consumer portals, in a clear and understandable manner. This was manifested through Mr. Hansen's ability to speak freely on the topic, while at the same keeping a stringent and clear line of argument. Finally, Mr. Hansen was able to give concise and well-reasoned answers as regards to ad-hoc questions asked throughout the lecture.
On behalf of the Human-Computer Interaction-team I am happy to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Mr. Hansen and we look forward on future collaboration.

DR (National Broadcasting Corporation)
Your lecture was great, and it clearly met all of our expectations. You had a lot of fascinating thoughts, which we can clearly take advantage of, when commencing the redesign of www.dr.dk.
You are a very good speaker, with no problems addressing a large audience in an inspiring manner.
The feedback I have received from the attendants has been very positive. Generally they where exited to hear somebody from outside our organization, speak of their experience with redesigning a portal.
